In the song, a scrub is a man who wants a woman’s attention and money while bringing nothing himself: he talks big, has no steady plan, shows off what he borrowed and expects someone else to pay. The word was Atlanta slang for a low-status, going-nowhere guy before the song made it national in 1999. “No scrubs” is the reply: not interested. Why did a 1999 song about saying no become a 2026 AI trend?
Three things lined up. The video is recognisable in a second — silver set, finger wag, three people in a row — so a remake reads as a joke straight away.
